10.0s · 1920×1080 · 30fps · one take

The intro film for this site's Music page, drawn by the music itself. The prompt presses play on Tranquil Tides; the horizon is the track's real waveform, a sea of ridges is its spectrum rolling in, and the covers rise like suns on the music's phrases.

Tranquil Tides, a calm piano and ocean track João composed with Suno, from 3:38 to 3:47, after soft typing sounds. No spoken dialogue.

The study

Open a page of music with a picture made from the music: every line in the film is computed from the track you hear, so sound and image are the same thing.

process notes

01

The picture is the audio

A Python script decodes the track and writes its spectrum and waveform for every frame. The canvas draws the horizon from the waveform and each ridge of the sea from a past moment of the spectrum, low notes in the middle and highs at the edges.

02

Cut on the phrases

The excerpt is placed so the track's two phrase changes land on the picture: the covers rise on the first, the title arrives on the second.

03

One source, two formats

The composition reads its frame size, so the same file renders this 16:9 cut and the 4:5 phone cut. The page plays it muted; this cut carries the track.
