40.0s · 1920×1080 · 30fps · one take

The film of Marks, my book of 398 logo identities, told in the language of the press: each mark printed plate by plate into register, a dive into the halftone dots, a press sheet folded into a signature, and a riffle through the bound book.

An original score composed in code, built from press-room sounds. No spoken dialogue. On-screen text carries the story.

The study

Make a book of logos feel like an object that was printed, not a slideshow of files, so the film ends where the book begins: on its cover, and on joaoqueiros.com/marks, where it can be read free.

process notes

01

Printed into register

Every page, mark and the cover come straight from the print-edition PDFs. Each featured mark is split into its four process inks in code; the plates fly in off register and lock on the beat, so the true colours appear only when they align.

02

The screen

The halftone is drawn live: four dot screens at their real angles sample whatever the camera sees, so the dive into one mark becomes giant rosette dots that re-form into the whole collection of 398.

03

Folded and bound

A press sheet of real pages, imposed as on press, folds three times in 3D into a signature; the riffle turns 65 leaves on a speed ramp and lands on pages 132 and 133, with a paper flick for every leaf in the score.
