Two of my Midjourney stills, joined without a cut. Lantern Festival comes apart from the left into about 32,000 leaves in its own colours, a wind gathers them into one swirling cloud, and they settle, bottom up, into Sea of Blooms.

An original score composed in code: an autumn waltz on felt piano and strings, with wind and rustling leaves. No spoken dialogue. On-screen text carries the story.

The study

Move from one still to another the way autumn moves: the picture doesn't cut, it lets go of its colour leaf by leaf and becomes the next one.

process notes

01

Two of my stills

Lantern Festival and Sea of Blooms come from this site's Stills collection. Every leaf takes its colour from the first picture and its place from the second.

02

Fronts, not a simulation

Each spot of the frame has a time it leaves the first image and a time it lands in the second, from the same two functions the leaves use, so picture and leaves always agree.

03

One clock

Every leaf's path is computed from time and its own seed on the GPU, and the score's rustle follows how many leaves are in the air at each moment.
