The intro film for this site's Films page. A render bar folds open into cinema letterbox bars, the films cut on the beat with each one riding in on a wave, and the last shot pulls back into a wall where every film plays, vertical cuts included.

An original score composed in code. No spoken dialogue. On-screen text carries the story.

The study

Open a page of surf and coastal films with an edit, the way the films themselves were made: cut on the beat, and every transition a wave.

process notes

01

Every cut is a wave

Each film enters behind a moving clip path shaped like a breaking wave, with a white crest drawn along its edge. The crest lands exactly on the beat.

02

A slate in the letterbox

The render bar folds into 2.39:1 bars; the bottom bar carries a film slate and a running timecode that follow the edit.

03

The last shot is a tile

The final shot is timed to match its own tile in a pre-composited wall of every film, so the pull-back is seamless; the sharp shot rides the tile until the tile is small enough to look sharp. The score is composed in code.
